Although 2007 regular season spring sports schedules are now available, school officials caution that the slates can change with little notice.
That is especially true in track and field, mostly because teams often show up unexpectedly for weekday meets and others sometimes cancel with only a day's notice. (Track schedules not available at press time.)
Last April, PHS boys and girls track team schedules showed the teams entered in the Queen Creek Invitational.
However, a day prior, the team traveled instead to a four-way meet at Fountain Hills.
"Queen Creek wouldn't let us in, so we had to change," coach Chuck Hardt said at the time.
That type of change is nothing unusual. Years ago, the team was headed for a meet at a Valley high school and was forced to change courses in the middle of the trip to compete at another site.
Last-minute changes also occur in golf, as coach Bret Morse and athletic director Tim Fruth scour to find courses where the teams are welcome to play.
Baseball and softball schedules sometimes change due to rain and wet playing fields.
Should that occur in East region games, Fruth must schedule makeup dates.
Nonregion games are usually not rescheduled.
The baseball team will receive a solid jump-start into the season at a pair of preseason tournaments that will give coach Jerry Daniels the opportunity to assess his players before the regular season begins in earnest March 13 against Holbrook.
The baseball team is currently competing in the Mohave Valley tournament that wraps up tomorrow, Saturday. Then it's on to the Miami Vandal Invitational to be held March 7 to March 10.
Second-year softball coach Curtis Johnson will have the opportunity to evaluate his players at the Wickenburg Invitational Tournament that begins today, Friday, and wraps up tomorrow.
The track and field team traveled yesterday, Thursday, to Flagstaff where the boys and girls competed in an indoor invitational held in Walkup Skydome.
Coach Bret Morse's golf team opened yesterday, Thursday, against Snowflake. (Results of Thursday competitions not available at press time).
