Warren S. Krom, 67, of Payson, died March 9, 2007 at RTA Hospice, following a long battle with congestive heart failure.
He was born in Ansonia, Conn. He grew up in the Philippines and Hawaii while his father, U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Stanley Floyd Krom was stationed there.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Krom entered college but shortly dropped out to follow in his father's footsteps and in 1936 he entered the U.S. Navy. He served aboard various ships in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
After the war, he worked in the aerospace industry with various companies. When jobs became scarce in that industry, he went to Denver where he learned carpentry and construction of models, dioramas and other items for window displays.
Mr. Krom returned to the San Diego area and in 1970 he married Louise Hall. After a few years the couple moved to the Denver area, where they lived until moving to Payson in 1998.
In Payson he was active in Community Presbyterian Church and for a period served as the head of transportation for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Krom was noted here as the artist who built the large model of the Zane Grey cabin that the Zane Grey Cabin Foundation used to promote its fund-raising events. Last year he made two dozen miniature models of the cabin for the foundation to use as decorations and prizes when it hosts the national convention of the Zane Grey West Society here in June. He also built the diorama of the American Canal to show how the development was planned as part of the Main Street development.
Mr. Krom is survived by his wife, Louise; two daughters by a previous marriage; and his brother, Kenneth of Point Loma, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Commander Krom; his mother, Elizabeth Agnes Krom; and his sister, Patricia.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St. in Payson. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Krom's name to the Community Presbyterian Church, the Zane Grey Foundation, P.O. Box 3188, Payson, AZ 85547, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
