Restaurant Is Lifelong Dream

Many Rim Country residents may know Miguel and Norma Chapario, owners of the Las Delicias Restaurant, from their other life in Payson.

The couple founded the Spanish ministry at the Mountain Bible Church several years ago.

Norma and Miguel Chapario opened their restaurant, Las Delicias, Jan. 19. They want to provide Payson and Rim Country residents a friendly, family atmosphere and authentic Mexican food.

After leaving their work at Mountain Bible, the couple went to Tucson, but always wanted to return to Payson.

"My wife really loves it here because things are so close," said Miguel through a translator. "She likes to walk around Green Valley Park."

In January, the couple returned to Payson and opened Las Delicias in the Tonto Plaza in January.

The restaurant has been a lifelong dream for Norma, Miguel said. "She's the boss."

"Yes, he's my employee," Norma laughed.

While Norma has 30 years experience in cooking, Las Delicias is the first restaurant the couple has owned.

She does most of the cooking, though Miguel makes a mean carne asada and a specialty, the Tonto Burro.

"Everything is good," he said. "We came to Payson to bring authentic Mexican flavor. Our goal is that we make people happy with our food and service."

There are five people working at Las Delicias right now, including Miguel and Norma, but they hope to bring in another cook so Norma can have a break. The restaurant, tucked into the center of Tonto Plaza, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

The couple has one daughter who helps in restaurant.

If things go according to their plan, they will build the business at Las Delicias and eventually open an additional restaurant.

The couple does not serve beer, wine or other liquor with their food.

They want the restaurant to have a friendly, family atmosphere.

Las Delicias is at 430 S. Beeline Highway, Payson. The phone number is (520) 850-1207.
