Joel Henry Mayer, age 80, of Payson, died Jan. 31, 2007 in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.
He was born in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, India, July 9, 1926.
Mr. Mayer was born to Lutheran missionaries Henry and Frieda Mayer, who were serving in India. He attended a school for missionary children in southern India, but finished high school in the United States due to World War II.
Following college and seminary, and a tour of duty in the Army, Mr. Mayer responded to a call to serve as a missionary in India in 1955. He married Lillian Lange, who was also a missionary in that country. The couple worked all their lives serving the South Andhra Lutheran Church in India retiring in 1991. After retirement they continued to visit India most winters.
Mr. Mayer was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Lillian A. Mayer on May 28, 2004; his parents, Henry and Frieda; and his brother, David.
Survivors include brothers, Donald Mayer and Robert Mayer; and children: Joan (Chuck) Campbell, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, David (Tanya) Mayer, Hondo, Texas, Carol (Jacob) Lee, Seguin, Texas, Paul (Jennifer) Mayer, Hutchinson, Minn., and John (Nancy) Mayer, Salt Lake City, Utah; and 14 grandchildren.
The funeral was held in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007. He was buried next to his father and brother David, who also died in India many years earlier. A memorial service was held by his home congregation at Mount Cross Lutheran Church of Payson.
