The Tonto National Forest will soon complete construction of new campgrounds and new picnic areas at Haigler Canyon, about 8 miles north of Young.
The new Haigler Canyon Recreation Site complex will feature a mix of camping and picnicking opportunities, all within easy reach of Haigler Creek. Some campsites will feature hard pads to accommodate trailers up to 35-feet long, while others will provide only walk-in tent sites. The site will feature an array of amenities, such as toilets, picnic tables and fire rings, but no water will be available on site.
"By moving parking and camping away from the side of the creek, we will be able to restore this scenic riparian area," said District Recreation Officer Dave Frew.
"We are also putting in some new trails throughout the area for fishermen and others interested in walking along the creek."
In order to fund regular services and maintenance, the district is proposing that the new recreation complex be added to the Tonto's existing fee system. The day use and camping fees would be $6 per vehicle per day. Visitors could use either the Tonto Pass or deposit their money into traditional "iron rangers" located on site.
