Spring cleaning might be turning up some trash that is difficult to throw away, such as old hazardous products and/or their empty containers. The county, town and state are joining efforts to solve the problem.
A household hazardous products collection event is set from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Payson Event Center.
Items being accepted include: herbicides, insecticides, antifreeze, gasoline, brake fluid, engine degreasers, transmission fluid, used motor oil, latex and oil-based paints, paint solvent, drain openers, oven cleaners, fluorescent lights, mercury thermometers, mothballs and propane gas cylinders.
This $20,000 event is co-sponsored by the Gila County Solid Waster Department and partially funded through a grant from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The Payson Public Works Department is also participating.
In addition to disposing of hazardous products at the May 12 collection, there will be a bin for discarding outdated computers, printers, fax machines and monitors.
For more information about the event, contact Sharon Radanovich, Gila County solid waste manager, at (928) 402-8531 or Public Works Director Buzz Walker at (928) 474-7052.
