Eleanor Rae Darby Garten, 86, of Grand Blanc, Mich., formerly of Payson, died May 8, 2007, at Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich, Mich.

Mrs. Garten was born June 3, 1920, in Flint, Mich., to Chester and Bernice Darby. She graduated from Central High School in 1938 and married William Newcombe, the same year. They moved to Chula Vista, Calif., in 1945. She was an executive secretary at, and retired from, Rohr Industries.

She and second husband, Harold Garten, moved to Payson, where she became a charter member of Mogollon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 2003, she moved back to Michigan to be near her son and family.

Survivors are sons David (Linda) Newcombe and William Newcombe; grandchildren, Michael and Ryan Newcombe; great-grandchildren, Madalyn and Brianna Newcombe, all of Michigan; sister, Gloria (Philip) Meyers, of Payson; nieces Laura Meyers of California, and Linda Meyers of Tennessee.

A private service will be held at a later date.
