Groups of friends, relatives, co-workers and club members, still have time to help make the Relay for Life 2007 the most successful ever.
The 12-hour, overnight team walk helps celebrate those who have survived cancer and honor those who have lost the battle with the disease. It also raises funds for cancer research and services for cancer patients in the Rim Country.
One of the estimated 30 teams that have already signed up is the crew from Desert Schools Credit Union.
This year, they have a very personal connection to the cause, a co-worker, Diana Martino, lost an 18-month battle with cancer in October.
The Desert Schools team -- Charles, Debbie, Leland, Lisa, Shalane, Terry, Victoria and Yvonne -- are making personal donations to the fund-raiser and have requested a corporate donation as well.
Team leader Leland said Desert Schools company is contributing $250 to the event.
Leland said, in addition to the loss of their co-worker, everyone on the team has had the disease impact their lives in a personal way.
"I lost my grandfather to cancer," he said. For that reason, he walked almost the entire 12 hours last year and plans to make the full 12 hours this year.
The event has grown each of the three years in which Leland and his co-workers have participated. The first year, 100 people participated and nearly double that last year. He has heard there are 30 teams signed up already -- and there is always room for more.
The Relay for Life 2007 will be held from 6 p.m. Friday, June 1, to 6 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Payson High School track.
