Three-year-varsity veteran Bryce Danielson shouldered the Longhorn load at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament, finishing 11th overall in a field of 80 qualifiers.
Danielson struggled the first day of the tournament, May 7, carding an 84 on the Continental Country Club course near Flagstaff. On the second day, however, he rebounded with a 76 for a 160. His 36-hole tally was 13 strokes off the winning pace of Sarah Freeman of Estrella Foothills.
Last year, as a junior, Danielson was 27th at the state meet played at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.
In 2004, when Payson was a member of the Class 4A Grand Canyon region, Danielson earned all-region honorable mention honors at the final tournament, played at Verde Santa Fe Golf Course in Cornville.
Danielson's efforts as a senior propelled the Longhorns to seventh-place overall in the 17-team field. The Horns posted a 693, which was the second-best score turned in by an East region team. Show Low finished fifth, with a 661.
State champion Chandler Seton Catholic dominated play at 621.
Runner-up Estrella Foothills posted a 653.
In individual play for Payson, Cody Waterman and Austin Slapnicka each played an 18-hole round in the tournament. The duo finished at 172 and in 26th place. Waterman shot an 86 and Slapnicka an 83.
Shane Tuer was 33rd overall at 179. On the first 18 holes, he finished with an 88. The second day, he carded a 91.
Ryan Kooi took 40th (91 and 91; 182) and Nathan Jones 42nd (92 and 91; 183).
