On Wednesday night, Mountain Meadows Bible Camp and the See Canyon Summer Homes were evacuated because strong winds from a storm north of the fire pushed the fire into See Canyon toward area homes.
Officials said the fire is within a mile of Christopher Creek and about three miles south of Bear Canyon Lake.
An evacuation center was set up at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, located at 601 E. Highway 260, in Payson.
Red Cross volunteers have the center manned 24 hours a day. The center is equipped with cots and blankets, food and drinks and will be available until at least Sunday, said Roxey Bowers, shelter manager.
Weather permitting, officials believe residents may be allowed back into their homes by Sunday. While pets are not allowed at the shelter, the Red Cross has an agreement with the Payson Humane Society to care for pets of displaced families, Bowers said.
Residents seeking entrance to their property within the restricted forest lands must contact the Gila County Sheriff's Office at (928) 474-2208.
For updated fire information, dialing 511 is the best resource, fire officials said. Local information can also be obtained at (928) 468-5611.
