The fire season is here with a vengeance. We now have two fires around Tonto Village. The first one was the Ponderosa Fire west of the village and was skillfully put out by Hotshot crews from around the area, along with the help of the Forest Service, Diamond Star and Christopher/Kohl's fire departments. Tonto Village residents, along with Thompson Draw and Bear Flat residents, thank all the volunteers who helped contain the fire and put out the hot spots in short order.
The second fire is much larger and is called the Promontory Fire. It is near the Rim and is a much harder fire to control since the area is in very rough terrain. Those of us who live in the area are so thankful that we have so many capable firefighters who help make all of us safe. Thank you to all of them.
Tonto Village Fire District
The Mini Academy for the volunteer firefighters will begin June 2 at the fire station. The day will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Lunch will be provided by the fire department auxiliary, at no cost to the volunteers. If you need any more information, call the station at (928) 478-4875 or visit the Web site at www.tontovillagefire.org.
There will be a special meeting of the fire board on Tuesday, May 29, to determine which outdated, excess or obsolete and non-working equipment will be put up for auction, for sale or disposal at the local landfill. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. This meeting is open to the public and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.
There will be a Memorial Day breakfast of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee served at the Tonto Village Chapel on Saturday, May 26, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and going until 10:30 a.m. Chorizo burritos will also be available for sale at $2 each. The breakfast prices are $5 a plate for adults and $2 for children under 6. Raffle tickets will also be available for sale on two hand-sewn quilts made by a domino diva and the auxiliary. Prices are $1 for one or six for $5. The drawing will be at the Labor Day Barbecue on Sept. 1, 2007.
There will also be booths set up for blood pressure checks, and fire safety along with a display of fire equipment by the volunteer firemen.
If that isn't enough for you, there will also be a Village-wide yard sale at individual homes going on all day. If you see a balloon on a fence, that home has something to sell.
There will be a special meeting on May 22 to firm up the final plans for the breakfast. The meeting will be held at Linda Stailey's home at 2 p.m. All auxiliary members and volunteers are welcome. The fireflies need help with setting up tables and signs.
The auxiliary has only two fund-raising events per year for the firefighters, so this event is important to the fire district. Please come out and support them.
The art group from the surrounding area will resume their get-togethers on Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m. The place has been changed to the Tonto Village Chapel for more room to paint. Everyone who is interested in any type of artwork is invited to show off what they have done or start a new project. If you would like to learn a new technique, there will be help available from the artists. Come on and join in and connect with your artistic side.
Get well and birthdays
Prayers and get-well wishes to Connie Weldon of Tonto Village III. Connie had a very serious operation to remove tumors from her upper spine this week at Barrow's in Phoenix. Connie is a Firefly and a domino diva and we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Grant Coley shares a birthday with Mike Preston on May 25. Alice Andreas celebrates her birthday on May 27. Happy birthday to each of you.
The Double D gals swept the tables this past Tuesday evening when they got together for the nine-ball tournament. Winners were Kara Shaw, Ethel Cain and Margaret Stasney.
There were no results available from the Sunday afternoon games. The results will added in next week's column.
Lot 173 in Tonto Village III has been sold to a couple from Mesa. Patrick and Rose McGlone along with their two boys, Jonathan and Sabastian, will be building their dream vacation home. Patrick is an architect by trade, so the home will be a fantastic undertaking. Welcome to the McGlones from the residents of the Village.
