56 Magic Number For Memorial Golf Tournament

This week, the Payson Women's Golf Association honored former members who died.

The tribute occurred at the annual Memorial Tournament, which has been played since 1988 at Payson Golf Course.

"It was originally the Mary Henderson Memorial but was then changed (to Memorial Tournament) to honor all our past members who have passed away," said PWGA member Joyce Goff.

In the 2007 edition of two-best ball formatted tournament, Karen Peterson and Shari Cody joined forces to take first place, with a card of 56.

By winning, the two unseated defending tournament champions Kay Davis and Isabella Sockrider who won the 2006 memorial with a 56.

That score seems to be a popular tally at the tournament.

In 2007, Susan Torrens and Claudia Bullard carded a 56 to finish second behind Peterson and Cody.

Joyce Karnes and Jan Burns took third by posting a 64.

Jan Burns won the closest-to-the-pin competition on No. 8 with a lie of 4 feet, 1 inch. Dorothy Meek took prize money on No. 14 at 24 feet, 1 inch.

Following the playing of the tournament, a lunch service honoring all former PWGA players was held at longtime member Alesha Calderwood's home.

Calderwood is a former Memorial champion, having won the tournament in 2002, with Brenda Baker as a partner.

The score?

You guessed it, 56.
