Dora P. Dawes, a 40-year Payson resident, died May 21, 2007 at her home in Payson. She was 84. Born July 21, 1922 in Douglas, Ariz. to Oscar and Mary Hudman Burns, she spent her early years in Phoenix, graduating from Phoenix Union High School in 1940.

After spending 20 years in Fallbrook, Calif., she moved to Payson in 1968, where she was employed by the Gila County court system and eventually became the first woman dispatcher for the Gila County Sheriff's Department. She later worked at the court as chief clerk and small claims hearing officer for judges Florence Greer, Howard Childers and Ezra Peace, officially retiring after having served as the first judge on the Tonto Apache Reservation in Payson.

Mrs. Dawes was a member of the Rim Christian Church and a 20-year member of the Sheriff's Posse and Payson Horseman's Association. She was an avid Diamondbacks fan and never missed a game, attending in person or watching on television.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Lange of Payson; daughters, Barbara Arboneaux of Fallbrook, Calif. and Darlene Mayes of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, William Dawes, Sr. of Payson; grandchildren, Robert Arboneaux, Jr., Mark Arboneaux, Tracie Gorham, Leslie Reinhold, Heather Layton, Amy Jordan, John Davies, Matthew Davies, Christopher Davies, Megan Trujillo, Laren Mayes, Kristina Buerger, William Dawes Jr. and Jackie Dawes; great-grandchildren, Sharayah, Blake and Blythe Gorham, Cruz, Chance and Luca Arboneaux; Jakob, Kyler and Ethan Reinhold; Jade, Holland and Asher Layton; Tye and Erica Jordan, Lily Davies, Judge Trujillo, Sterling Dawes and Dalli Aguirre.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25 at Calvary Chapel, 1103 N. Beeline Hwy., Payson, with graveside services immediately following at Mountain Meadow Cemetery.

Donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Dawes for the new dialysis center, to open in the fall, and should be sent to Rim Country Health and Retirement, c/o Harvey Pelovsky, 807 W. Longhorn Rd., Payson, AZ 85541. A notation should be made on both the check and envelope, "For Dialysis Center Only."
