I'd like to help the Payson Town Council to hire a new police chief. I believe it should be Don Engler.
I've known Don and his family for more than 20 years. When I was on the Payson Town Council, I worked with him many times. I've watched him become a better law enforcement officer by attending the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., being awarded a bachelor's degree in public safety administration and a master's degree in business administration, with emphasis on leadership. He wanted to do this to become a better officer, with an eye on advancement. Anyone who puts that much effort into bettering himself wants to excel in his work.
The years he spent on the police force in Payson are a plus. Anyone hired from somewhere else would spend a year or more learning our Town's procedures, what ordinances are in effect and how a town under Home Rule is governed.
No matter how much experience you have somewhere else, you cannot just walk into a job and know what needs to be done without spending time learning what transpired before you came.
With Don's experience, the police department would not miss a beat. Don is a personable man and an excellent speaker, as well as what I call a "people" person -- knowing how to deal with all kinds of people and circumstances. What more could Payson need?
