Residents and visitors to Rim County may see smoke south of Payson this week, due to a prescribed burn.
Fire personnel with the Payson Ranger District will begin the burn operation today, Tuesday, if optimum weather conditions are available.
The burn will focus on 10 acres of debris piles about 10 miles south of Green Valley Lakes, as well as 90 acres of ponderosa pine debris piles southwest of Verde Glen, according to a press release from the forest service.
"Each fall, fire personnel conduct prescribed burning on the Payson Ranger District to reduce catastrophic wildfire danger," according to the release.
"The growth, rate of fire spread and smoke from prescribed burning are closely monitored. Aggressive suppression actions are taken if the fire displays behavior that does not meet resource management objectives."
Other prescribed burn operations to date have been limited, due to above-average temperatures and dry conditions.
