Andrew Austin was born Sept. 4, 1917 in New York City and died Nov. 11, 2007 at Payson RTA Hospice and Palliative Care Facility after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Austin attended St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Payson.
He brought his family from Yonkers, N.Y. to Phoenix in 1955, where he worked as an offset pressman until his retirement from Luke Air Force Base.
Mr. Austin served as an Army sergeant, stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. His duties as a cook involved preparing meals for 5,000 troops daily, while supervising Italian and German prisoners of war.
He was known for his great "Irish" sense of humor and his friendliness toward others.
Mr. Austin faithfully attended to his wife, Jane, during a final prolonged illness.
He provided inspiration and encouragement to his sons, their wives, the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, who died June 28, 2001.
He is survived by his sons, Andrew D. Jr. (Rose Anne) of West Hartford, Conn. and John (Debbie) of Payson; grandchildren, Shelly C. of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Rion E. of San Francisco, Calif., Jennifer Hoke (Mark) and Cassandra Zerbe both of Payson; great-grandchildren, David (D.J.) Yates of Chandler, Timothy Hoke of Payson, and soon-to-arrive, Emma Rae.
Services were Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007 at St. Philips Catholic Church in Payson.
