Longhorn Winter Sports Teams On The Road

Wrestlers, boys, girls basketball teams prep for season openers

The dog days of grueling preseason practice sessions are finally ending for athletes participating in Payson High School winter sports.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams have the opportunity Friday, to finally scrimmage against someone other than their own teammates, when both squads travel to Camp Verde.

Kayla Morgan will be among those expected to shoulder a leadership role during the upcoming hoop season.

The Lady Longhorns, under second year coach Grant Coley, scrimmage the CV Cowboys at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., first year coach Kenny Hayes makes his coaching debut against CV.

Both contests are scrimmages only and the results and statistics do not count in regular season standings. Also, no score is to be kept and coaches can stop play to give instruction.

Both teams will be returning to the hardwood after busy summer schedules in which the two teams competed in off-season clashes around the state.

During the summer campaign, the Lady Horns also traveled to San Diego, Calif. and Spokane, Wash. for tournaments and camps.

The highlight of the boys' summer season was the Arizona State University team camp held in Wells Fargo Arena. There, the Payson team played summer squads representing schools from around the country.

The Payson High School wrestling team opens the season Nov. 28 against Fountain Hills. Match time is 3:30 p.m. in Wilson Dome. The prep match will be followed by a Western State College of Colorado vs. Grand Canyon University clash.

The regular season opens for both hoop teams Nov. 20 against Scottsdale Christian. The boys team travels to Scottsdale for 4 (frosh), 5:30 (jayvee) and 7 p.m. (varsity) games.

The Lady Horns will host SC in junior and varsity contests. Game times are 5:30 and 7 p.m.
