The Lady Longhorns opened the new season on a winning note by running roughshod, 46-37, over Scottsdale Christian Academy.
"All our players had a chance to get lots of playing time, which resulted in a game where the score was closer than the game actually was," coach Grant Coley said.
In the non-region clash played Nov. 20 in Wilson Dome, the Lady Horns jumped out to an early 10-7 lead and
expanded it to 16-9 at halftime.
Payson doubled the score on SC in the crucial third quarter, outscoring the academy 19-8, thanks in part to pressure defense.
"We turned up the heat with a modified full-court press," Coley said.
In the fourth stanza, with many of the Lady Horn reserves on the court, SC made the final count much more respectable by outscoring PHS 20-11.
Point guard Cydney Figueroa led the Lady Horns offensively with 19 points, forward Jenna Robertson pounded her way inside for 10 points and a team high 16 rebounds. Kayla Morgan finished with eight points.
The Lady Horns (1-0) return to the court today, Tuesday, when the team hosts Fountain Hills in Wilson Dome.
The two teams are no strangers to one another. Last season, the Lady Horns opened the campaign, pounding Fountain Hills 63-37. In that lopsided win, Figueroa, Robertson and Morgan played prominent roles, as they are expected to do today.
Game times are 5:30 (jayvee) and 7 p.m. (varsity).
The Lady Horns also travel Nov. 30 to Valley Christian before hosting Florence Dec. 4 in Wilson Dome.
