The Gila County Narcotics Task Force took nine undocumented aliens into custody on Thursday morning, Nov. 15 in the Payson area.
GCSO Lt. Tim Scott said interdiction officer Dennis Newman pulled over a vehicle on a standard traffic stop around 11 a.m. Thursday morning south of Payson.
After making the stop, Newman was able to determine that the occupants were undocumented immigrants and took them into custody, Scott said.
"The driver of the vehicle took off running," Scott said.
He said deputies began a search of the area, but were unable to locate the driver.
A further search by DPS helicopter also failed to turn up the driver.
"Unfortunately, it looks like we might not get the driver," Scott said.
Scott said the nine undocumented aliens were held in custody in the Payson jail until they were picked up and transported to the Valley by ICE.
