Payson's most accomplished Special Olympics athlete, David Frohme, and several of his teammates are prominently featured on a first ever SO Arizona Promotion DVD.

"On the promotional video, the team in the light blue T-shirts is from Payson," local SO coach Ruby Lane said. "They are featured in video two different times."

Special Olympics coach Rudy Lane accompanied SO athlete David Frohme to the Beauty of the Bonzer Concert for Charity held at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix.

Lane and Frohme were among the invited guests who participated Sept. 15 in a premiere of the Arizona SO DVD. The DVD was first shown to the public on a big screen at the Beauty of a Bonzer Concert for Charity at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix.

Watching the DVD with the Arizona Special Olympic athletes, coaches and volunteers were Sammy Hagar and Cheap Trick band members.

"They got to see it between musical sets they did for us," Lane said. "It was a wonderful time."

The DVD featured Special Olympics Arizona Athletes competing at State Games.

One of the segments included an interview with Frohme who, Lane said, "spoke amazing words of inspiration."

Frohme's speech can be heard at: http://www.specialolympicsarizona.org/athletes/athlete_spotlight_on_ DavidFrohm.asp.

Frohme has been competing on Payson SO teams for the past two decades.

In 1999 he traveled to the SO World Games in North Carolina.

The local Special Olympics team is currently practicing swimming skills in preparation for an Oct. 5-6 competition to be held in Surprise.

Also, the bowling and bocce teams have begun practice sessions.

The purpose of the SO program in Payson and nationwide is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
