On Oct. 13 and 14, the Tonto Rim Sports Club hosted the Payson Silhouette Championship. There were four matches over the two-day event and 90 shooters participated. Shooters came from California, Utah and all over Arizona.

The matches were shot with 22 rim-fire rifles at metal targets.

The "Long Range" matches shoot distances of 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards. The "Short Range" matches are at 40, 50, 75 and 100 yards. Even though the shooting was very difficult, with wind gusts at times reaching 40-45 mph, the scores were very good for the conditions.

A good spotter is imperative, as the spotter watches the shots and the wind and tells the shooter how much to correct left or right and up or down. Therefore the shooter only has to concentrate on the target and sight picture.

The winners were: Short Range Champion, Pat Taylor; Long Range Champion, Dick Norton; High Silhouette Champion, Lee Bumbalow; Ladies Champion, Katie Dunks; Youth Short Range Champion, Dillon Amburgey.
