Two people died Labor Day in a single-car accident on Highway 87, just outside Payson.
A press release from DPS spokesperson Harold A. Sanders said the accident occurred near Milepost 247 at approximately 8:48 Monday morning in the southbound lanes of Highway 87, about three miles south of Payson.
Sanders said the driver of the vehicle lost control "for some unknown reason," causing the vehicle to exit the highway onto the dirt shoulder of the road and crash into a wash and ravine, approximately 100 feet from the highway.
After rolling over, the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, DPS officials said.
DPS said the cause of the accident is undetermined. At this time police are uncertain if impairment played a role in the fatal accident. The investigation is ongoing.
There were no witness or related statements about the accident available, Sanders said.
DPS said names of the deceased individuals are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
Sanders said the road was not obstructed because of the accident.
