Chapel Acts As Community Center

The biggest and one of the longest holidays is now behind us. Labor Day weekend was very successful for Tonto Village.

The barbecue put on by the Fireflies was a huge success.

The Tonto Village Fire District auxiliary managed to get together for a group picture during their biggest fund-raiser of the year, the Labor Day Bash.

Although the auxiliary was short-handed, they managed to spread themselves thinly to make sure that all concessions were covered.

The Tonto Village firefighters were attending Firefighter I classes at Gila County Community college the same day.

The winners of the special raffle items were:

Junior Barr -- scanner,

Ruth Beatty -- paw print quilt,

Lori Mulvey -- denim quilt,

C. Barkley -- Skil saw,

Rick Meeker -- fire pit and

Suzy Dupke -- chain saw.

The winners of the quad parade was the Vargovich family, Mark, Joseph and Ashley, from Tonto Village II.

Congratulations to all the winners.

A Firefly thank you

The Fireflies wish to thank all the volunteers and the contributors to the barbecue.

They made the fund-raiser the largest and the best day ever for the firefighters in the Tonto Village Fire District.

A very special thank you goes to Pastor Charles Wilcox and the congregation for the use of the chapel for the firefighters.

The Vargovich family of Tonto Village II won the Quad parade at the Labor Day Bash. They are Mark, Joseph and Ashley.

The chapel has been very helpful by acting as a community center for the village and the whole fire district and other community activities.

The Fireflies will hold their next meeting at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Tonto Village Chapel.

The Tonto Village Fire District fire board will hold their next meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the fire station. As always, the meetings are open to the public.

Tonto Village Chapel

There will be a retirement party for Pastor Wilcox and his wife Brenda at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9. It will be a potluck party. Please bring a dish to share.

The Domino Divas are meeting at the Chapel every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Mexican Train and Chicken Foot are their games of choice. Everyone is invited to come and play.

Bear Flat

Bear Flat had many campers this past weekend, as did the areas surrounding Tonto Village. Rainfall was at a minimum for the campers and residents.

The amount for the month of August was 3.05 inches of precipitation. Last year, Bear Flat reported 10.35 inches for the same time-period.

Year-to-date totals for this year is 15.35 inches compared to 18.67 inches last year.

As you can determine by the figures, the rainfall is behind last year's precipitation.

Is the drought still with us and for how much longer?

Birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Charlie Terry, our local welder for the village, will add another candle to his birthday cake on September 10. Charlie has had 79 of those days and will add another year. Charlie is just as busy as ever and hasn't slowed down a bit.

Marge Tolby of Tonto Village III will have her big day on Sept. 12.

Jessica Slapnicka will be 17 on Sept. 13. Jessica is the daughter of Randy and Brenda of Tonto Creek Road. Jessica is a junior at Payson High School and one of the varsity cheerleaders.

The importance of birthdays is not how many you've had, but rather how well you've celebrated. Happy birthday !

Pool results

This past Sunday afternoon there were fourteen players to pitch their shooting expertise against each other in the eight-ball tournament.

When the chalk dust settled, Peter Speiss, Lorraine ‘Bo" Mathews, and Randy Lusti shot for first, second and third places.

Tuesday evening at the Double D, the gals played nine-ball. Nanci Olson, Sue Prach and Kerry Ruzza were the three top winners. Congratulations to all the players who shot the best.
