Horizon Insurance Group and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company have given the Payson Fire Department a $8,647 grant to purchase firefighting gear and equipment.

Fire Chief Marty deMasi said his department will receive five specific pieces of equipment, mostly for use during fires. The package includes two new lightweight, yet rugged nozzles, a ventilation fan to clear smoke from a building, and two rapid intervention kits used to rescue firefighters injured or trapped inside a burning structure.

"Oftentimes, fire departments don't have the luxury of purchasing all the new equipment they would like," said Chief deMasi. "This grant will enable us to buy new tools we need to improve our ability to fight fires in the community and keep our firefighters safe."

The Payson Fire Department will also use nearly $800 of the grant money to purchase new education materials to promote fire safety within the community.

DeMasi, Payson firefighters and Horizon Insurance Group and Fireman's Fund executives came together for a special presentation of the grant during the Horizon Charity Open 2007 golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Orange Tree Golf Resort (Club House) in Scottsdale.
