Two people who died Labor Day in a single car accident on State Route 87 just outside Payson have been identified.
Jason C. Sessions, 27, of Nutrioso, and his passenger, Deanna K. Holt, of Gilbert, were both killed when the vehicle Sessions was driving, a yellow 2003 Ford pickup, left the highway, rolled and then crashed into a tree.
DPS spokesperson Harold A. Sanders said the accident occurred near Milepost 247 at approximately 8:48 a.m. on Labor Day, Sept. 3, in the southbound lanes of Highway 87, about three miles south of Payson.
DPS said the driver of the vehicle lost control "for some unknown reason," causing the vehicle to exit the highway onto a dirt embankment and crashing into tree, where it came to rest approximately 100 feet from the highway.
Sanders said the pickup first rolled over after leaving the highway, before it crashed into the tree.
"Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene," Sanders said.
Neither occupant of the vehicle was wearing a safety belt.
