Gambling On Higher Education

Game players have the opportunity to spin the roulette wheel and help the Gila Foundation for Higher Education raise scholarship funds for local students.

GFHE hosts its annual Casino Night at Chaparral Pines on April 27.

There will be a real craps table, sponsored by Mazatzal Hotel and Casino, seven blackjack tables, 50/50 drawings, raffles and a silent auction.

Gamblers will use chips rather than sawbucks. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening to the three people with the most chips in-hand.

Professional dealers and craps personnel from Casino World will take part in the events.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with professional dealers and craps personnel from Casino World shuffling the cards and watching the dice. Hors d'eouvers from Chaparral Pines will accompany the fun.

Tickets are $100 per person and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Aces and Eights" table sponsorship includes company recognition at the roulette wheel table or one of the blackjack tables, plus signage and two tickets to the event is $500.

Proceeds from the event assists college-bound youth.

"We have eight new applicants that are being considered for scholarships for summer and fall semesters," GFHE member Teddy Cohen said.

The organization was able to give eight students a total of $6,900 in scholarships after Casino Night 2007 and they would like to be able to beat that amount this time, Cohen said.

The majority of scholarships in the past have gone to students entering health fields, but scholarship applications are open and available to students considering other fields.

"About 95 percent of our applicants renew and are approved," Cohen said.

The one non-scholarship item Gila Foundation approved was the purchase of a piano for the college Cohen said.
