Shelter Well Represented At Walk-A-Hound Event

I had never entered a 5K race before, and I'm pretty sure Sasha hadn't either. But, by the time we crossed the finish line, my shelter dog buddy and I had managed to come in third in my age category at Payson Park and Recreation's Walk-A-Hound, Lose-A-Pound event held last Saturday at Green Valley Park.

Sasha wasn't the only Payson Humane Society pooch to produce a medal after prancing proudly past the judges. In their respective age groups, volunteers Jim Muhr and spirited Otis won a third-place medal, George White and furry friend Bubbles finished a resounding second, and Vickie Hendricks and lovable Levi also sported a theatrical third in the event.

Other grand showings came from new volunteer Judy Reizer and her sidekick, Puffin; Barb Brenke with knightly Nikoli; and Lisa Boyle and our hound honey, Gertie.

According to past participants, attendance was overall low, with a grand total of 29 runners/walkers, but a good time was had by man and beast alike. We couldn't have been more proud of our eight enthusiastic shelter dogs. We invite you to walk or run with some of our beautiful residents when the event rolls around again next year.

Now, meet some of the dogs who represented PHS in the 5K, as well as some of the many other great pets available for adoption at our shelter.

Angel is a spayed 1-year-old lab mix. She was owner-donated because they didn't have time for her. They said she chews when she's alone. She minds well and has lots of energy. She gets along with the other dogs. Probably needs leash training. Angel is outgoing and playful; a very sweet girl.

Babe is a 2-year-old spayed brindle Pit Bull Terrier. She gets along with the other dogs and loves to play in the yard. She's laid back and mellow, and she can be timid at times. Babe needs leash training. She was brought in by Payson Police, along with her son, who's already been adopted. Her owners contacted us, but never came down to reclaim their dogs.

Bubbles is a 1-year-old spayed Corgi/Lab mix. She gets along well with the other dogs and loves to play. She loves the play yard and the wading pools where she can get wet. She will lie in your lap and let you love on her. She's not aggressive at all. Very loving and playful. Bubbles was brought in by Animal Control and she needs some leash training.

Little Bit is a 6-month-old spayed Shar Pei mix. She's all black, with a matching black spot on her tongue. She is somewhat timid at first but very sweet and gentle. She needs training and is not housebroken. She plays well with the other dogs in the yard. She was brought in by Payson Police. Her former owners saw her here and said they had given her to a family member, but no one came for her. Little Bit is very sweet, with a great disposition.

Otis is a 2-1/2-year-old, neutered Lab mix. His owners turned him over because they said he is scared of everything. He is a little timid at first in his kennel. When you get him out to the yard, he does great. He will play fetch for hours! He does well with the other dogs, but unsure about other male (alpha) dogs. He is housebroken and knows how to sit and fetch. Otis does OK on a leash.
