Stewart "Stu" Allen

Stewart "Stu" Allen, 68, of Payson, died April 2, 2008. He was born Sept. 13, 1939 to Lester and Alice Allen in San Diego, Calif.

Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962 as a flight medic, stationed primarily in the Azores islands.

After his stint in the service, he met Kay Winkowski in Bessemer, Mich., and the two were married on May 8, 1965.

While in Michigan, Mr. Allen pursued his true passion of mechanics and owned and operated "Stu's Shop and VW Repair." He would build engines to sand rails with other family members and friends.

Skeeter Winkowski developed a team known as "The Other Guys," and it raced in multiple states. Stu and Kay decided after many years in Michigan to move their family to Payson in 1978, where Mr. Allen became the Town of Payson's mechanic from 1978 through 1995, at which time he retired due to health reasons.

Being a mechanic at heart, his hobbies entailed flying remote-controlled airplanes. On Thursdays, weather permitting, you could find him at Green Valley Park with his remote-controlled airplanes and/or sailboats, with his friends.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kay Allen of Payson; daughters, Sue Stewart of Rochester, Minn. and Vicki Allen-Raines of Peoria; his pride and joy, granddaughter Brittany Kay Stewart of Peoria; and his sister, Elizabeth Igou of Bessemer, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Charles "Nick" Carter.

The family expresses special thanks for all the compassionate care given by Dr. Ali Askari, Dr. Jaber Abawi, dearest friends at the Payson Professional Medical Center, Dr. Michael Lowe and staff of Payson RTA Hospice, and to all of the physicians and nurses at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.

Per Mr. Allen's wishes, there will be no services. Messinger Payson Funeral Home arranged cremation.

Donations in remembrance of Mr. Allen may be made to the Payson Humane Society, 812 S. McLane Rd., Payson, AZ 85541.

The above obituary is being reprinted at the request of the family.
