Board Reassigns 26 Students To New School To Reduce Travel Time

Rye, Deer Creek, Gisela students will now attend Payson Elementary

The Payson Unified School District is planning to switch students around to lessen travel times.

To accomplish that goal, students at two of the school district's elementary schools will be attending a different school for the 2008-2009 school year.

Approximately 26 students will be affected by the switch according to district superintendent Casey O'Brien.

At its Monday, April 14 meeting, the board unanimously approved taking the students from Rye, Deer Creek and Gisela who currently attend Julia Randall Elementary School, and move them to Payson Elementary School next year.

"Although PES is further than JRE from Gisela, Deer Creek and Rye, we are making an adjustment in transporting these students which will result in 20-30 minutes less travel time to go to and from Payson Elementary School compared to the travel time to and from Julia Randall Elementary School this year," said O'Brien.

By switching students to Payson Elementary School from Julia Randall Elementary, buses will travel farther, but will have fewer stops resulting in less travel time, O'Brien said.

In other action the board approved the same benefits package and carrier as last year.
