Middle School Gets New Principal

Rim Country Middle School has a new principal who will take up residence in Payson near June 1.

The Payson Unified School District has approved hiring Gary Witherspoon as the new principal at Rim Country Middle School.

Witherspoon, who is currently at Snowflake Intermediate School, will replace Rim Country Middle School's current principal, Monica Nitszche, who will retire after the 2007-2008 school year.

Witherspoon has seven years experience in school administration, two as an assistant principal at the high school in Snowflake and four as principal of Snowflake Intermediate School.

He said he has been trying to get a job in Payson for some time and when the opportunity came up, he sent in his application.

"I interviewed for a position at Julia Randall Elementary School a few years ago, but wasn't chosen, so when I saw that Principal Nitszche was retiring this year I decided to try again," Witherspoon said.

He said it is still early to forecast any changes he might want to accomplish at Rim Country Middle School.

"My intentions right now are to be a service leader and support programs that have proven successful," he said.

Witherspoon and his wife have four boys. A 15-year-old sophomore and 16-year-old junior, who will attend Payson High School.

Two other children will attend third and fourth grades at one of the elementary schools.

Witherspoon accepted the position at the April 14 Payson Unified School District board meeting.

He said he has already signed his contract and will hand deliver it to the district.

Witherspoon said he will meet some of his future students on April 29 at the sixth grade orientation at Rim Country Middle School and will meet staff on May 7.
