Safeway's Muscular Dystrophy Association Rummage Sale is from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22-23. Time is running out to rent a booth and hold your own garage sale at Safeway.

Don't want to stick around to sell your stuff? We will also be accepting donations of gently used items for our sale, proceeds benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. There is a drop-off location in front of Safeway. Please see store for details or call Lynne at (928) 472-4661.

Scout Registration Night is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260 (in the big log cabin). The different groups are Girl Scouts for girls in grades K-12, Cub Scouts for boys in grades 1-5, and Boy Scouts for boys in grades 6-12. A new Scout program is starting for young men and women, ages 14 to 21 -- Adventure Scouts. Volunteers are always welcome and needed. In a related event, Safeway is holding its 3rd Annual Sports Memorabilia and Collectables Silent Auction to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Auction items include autographed items from Phoenix Suns, Texas Rangers, ASU Athletics, Cardinals and much more. Bidding closes at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6.

Scrub sale

Apparel Pro Health Care Wear will have a scrub sale in the Payson Regional Medical Center lobby from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 21. Look for "Scrub Bucks" around town and receive a discount. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted. All monies raised will help to fund the many programs and scholarships available to the community through the Mogollon Health Alliance. Book writing workshop

Beginning and experienced writers are invited to learn how to write and sell a book successfully at a writing workshop featuring nationally known novelist Betty Webb of Scottsdale. Sponsored by Arizona Press Women, the event is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 in the community room of the Payson Public Library, 328 McLane Rd.

The cost is $20 and includes refreshments and handouts. Open auditions Aug. 20 for PHS production

Longhorn Theatre, the Payson High School Drama Department, has chosen Jerome McDonough's play "Addict," for one of their fall community service projects.

There are 15-20 roles available for teenagers and two age-open roles. Auditions will be open to the community and will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 in the PHS Auditorium. Actors have the option of presenting a one-minute prepared dramatic monologue. All actors will be asked to read from the script. Performances will be Nov. 14 and 15.

Day of Reckoning BMX, skate contest Aug. 23

The Day of Reckoning 08 BMX, Skate Contest and Concert with Mike Metzger takes place from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at Rumsey Park.

Pro skaters Anthony Carney, Fabian Cosin, and Pro BMX rider Aaron Johnson will be there. The BMX skate contest will be two heats: Your Machine and Panima.

There will be a "Fear Factor" contest, giveaways and free food.

There is no admission charge for this event.

Women's ‘Step Outside' weekend Aug. 30-31

Women are invited to "Step Outside" with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, Town of Payson, Chandler Rod and Gun Club and the Tonto Rim Sports Club at the Houston Mesa Horse Camp just north of Payson, to learn more about outdoor recreation Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30-31.

This two-day, overnight campout will introduce women to camping skills, wildlife conservation, fishing, shooting sports and archery at the Jim Jones Shooting Range.

Activities will include camp and campfire set-up, instruction in shotguns, long rifles and archery, hiking, fishing, outdoor photography and natural environment education.

The cost is $50 per woman, which includes all meals prepared by members of Chandler Rod and Gun Club. Pick up a handout with more event details and register through Aug. 22 at the parks office, 1000 W. Country Club Drive (on the south side of Green Valley Park).

PATS hike Saturday

Payson Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor another Payson Area Trails System (PATS) hike of Round Valley Trail Saturday, Aug. 23.

This moderate to strenuous 4.5-mile hike starts at 8:30 a.m. at the South Phoenix trail access, which is 1.5 miles east of Highway 87 on the south side of Phoenix Street. The beautiful route features views of Payson, the Granite Dells and the Mogollon Rim.

Art workshop offered

Down the Street Art Gallery, 703 W. Main St., will offer a workshop in Water Media Collage/Cards Aug. 26 and 27. This two-morning class will use 5x7 cards as the finished product, using watercolor, acrylics, metallics, stamping, weaving, paper and collage, including some objects such as leaves, photographs or lace.

The workshop is open to those of all skill levels who want to have fun making a functional item. Sessions will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. For cost and more information, call April Bower at (928) 978-5533.

Payson schools observe half-day Aug. 27

Payson Unified School District #10 will observe a half-day in service day Wednesday, Aug 27.

Julia Randall, Payson and Frontier Elementary Schools dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served to students before they depart. Rim Country Middle School dismisses at 12:30 p.m. after serving lunch. Payson High School dismisses at 12:05 p.m. without serving lunch, followed by a brief, optional club period.

The RCMS/PHS buses depart from the schools at 12:35 p.m.

The Forgotten Children of Kaswanga

A program on Payson people bringing pure water, vegetable gardens and a feeding center for 200 children left orphaned by the many diseases on the tiny island of Rusinga in Lake Victoria, Africa will be presented at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29 and 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 30. The Aug. 29 program will be at The Meeting Place, 1107 S. Beeline, Suite 2. The Aug. 30 program is at the Payson Seventh-day Adventist Church, 700 Wade St.

Daryl and Mary Jo Oft, owners of Diversified Solutions, who work as missionaries with Living Waters International, along with Shirley Feather, who accompanied them on their 2008 trip to Africa, are presenting the program.

Library bookstore sale

The Library Friends of Payson Bookstore, 328 N. McLane Road, is featuring an End-of-Summer Clearance of hardback books. The books will be on sale at two for the price of one throughout August. As always, the second book must be of equal or lesser value than the first.
