The Payson Men's Golf Association club championship will be decided tomorrow, Aug. 20, when Rick Korth and Brandan Kelley lock horns on Payson Golf Course.
The pair survived two earlier rounds of play to reach the finals.
In the semifinals, Korth defeated Larry Smith, 6-up and Kelley beat Jessie Smith, 2-up.
In the first round of championships played Aug. 6 at PGC, Korth defeated Steve Heskett, 3-up, Larry Smith beat Troy Neal, 1-up and Jessie Smith whipped Terry Lindsey, 7-up. Kelley had a first-round bye.
In that fray, closest to the pin winners were Phil Wagner (No. 2; 7 feet, 1 inch and No. 8; 8 feet, 9 inches), Ed Kuhns (No. 14; 12 feet, 11 inches), Steve Holmes (No. 17; 3 inches) and Kelley (No. 5; 6 feet, 3 inches).
In the Aug. 13 second round, closest to the pin money winners were Ed Flores (No. 2; 9 feet, 7 inches), Dick Ceyler (No. 8; 4 feet, 2 inches), Terry Lindsey (No. 14; 8 feet, 4 inches) and Neal (No. 5; 6 feet, 11 inches).
Went up the hill
Also on the Rim Country golf scene, members of the Payson Women's Golf Association teamed up with their counterparts in the PMGA for the annual Jack and Jill Tournament.
"It was a success," PWGA member Joyce Goff said.
Playing in a low net best ball format, Susan Torrens and Gary Vaplon joined forces for a tally of 54 and first place.
In the battle for second, the team of Jan Burns/Rick Korth tied with Karol Uptain/Bill Cain. Both duos turned in identical cards of 57.
Third place also ended in a tie when both teams scored 57. The teams were Mary Cain/Herb Sherman and Claudia Bullard/ Dave Herbert.
Laura Meyocks won closest to the pin laurels on holes No. 8 and 14. Marilyn Schaal was closest on No. 5 and Claudia Bullard on No. 15.
Among the PMGA players, winners were Harry Parsons (No. 5), Herbert (No. 8 and 14) and Neal (No. 17).
