Although the PHS football and volleyball campaigns are in full swing, cross-country and soccer action has not yet tipped off.
The cross-country season begins Sept. 2 at Hopi.
PHS athletic director Jason Lobik calls the multi-meet "a real good test early" because many of the northern Arizona reservation schools, where long distance running is a way of life, will participate. The season continues Sept. 6 at Peaks in Flagstaff.
Also on the running agenda is an Oct. 8 meet at LaJoya Community High School in Avondale. That meet was added early this week and is not included on earlier PHS sports schedules.
Both the boys and girls soccer teams held preseason scrimmages yesterday, Aug. 28, against Northland Prep in Flagstaff. AIA rules mandate no scores or official statistics be kept in scrimmages.
The girls regular season begins Sept. 2 against Blue Ridge in Payson. Game times are 4 p.m. (junior varsity) and 6 p.m. (varsity).
Although the Yellow Jackets and Lady Horns are both members of the 3A East region, the game has been designated as a non-region showdown, as is a clash the following day, Sept. 3, against visiting Show Low.
The games between the rivals that count in the East standings will be contested Oct. 7 (Show Low) and Oct. 14 (Blue Ridge).
Coach Chad Gower's varsity team kicks off the campaign Sept. 3 in Show Low. Game times are 4 p.m. (junior varsity) and 6 p.m. (varsity).
This year, the Payson tournament will be held Sept. 26 and 27 at Rumsey Park.
