Payson High School’s 2008-2009 wrestling team was short-manned when it opened on the road at Fountain Hills Nov. 26.
“We took only eight guys,” said coach Travis Kopenhafer.
Those eight guys “wrestled really well,” the coach added.
The Longhorns lost only four matches and won 16 (total points and individual statistics were not available at press time).
“With our football guys back now, we’ll fill all but two weights,” he said.
Kopenhafer said the Horns, as of now, don’t have students to wrestle at the 112 lb. and 140 lb. weight classes.
Initially about 30 students came out to be part of the new season’s squad, but now only two dozen or so remain involved, the coach said.
The Longhorn wrestling home opener is Wednesday, Dec. 10.
Payson will host Blue Ridge, Show Low and Snowflake in a multi-meet, which is set to start at 1 p.m. in Wilson Dome.
Kopenhafer said he expects Blue Ridge — and possibly the other teams — to be out for revenge for the Longhorns’ victorious perfect season in football, in which all three schools were handed defeats.
