The Lady Horns’ winning ways hit a roadblock hosting Valley Christian Friday.
The girls played a tight game, staying close on the scoreboard through every quarter but the first.
The Valley Christian Trojans put up 16 points to Payson’s 10 in the first quarter. And although the scoring was tight the rest of the game, the Lady Horns could not get beyond the opening deficit.
The second quarter saw a tie in scoring, with both teams putting 13 points on the board. Valley Christian made another 13 points in the third quarter, while Payson made 12. In the final period, the Lady Horns had one more point scored than the Trojans, with Payson putting up 12 to the Trojans’ 11. The final tally was Valley Christian 53, Payson 47.
“The girls played very well at times,” said coach Stacy Anderson.
There were too many turnovers, she added.
“In a tight game like this, the victory is going to go to the team that makes the fewest mistakes. Unfortunately, we had too many.”
Leading scorers for the Lady Horns were Jenna Robertson with 15 and Christina Deaton and Kayla Morgan, who both put up 14 points. Robertson led in rebounds with 12, followed by Deaton with 8. Deaton also had 5 assists and 4 steals. Cydney Figueroa had 4 assists.
“The effort was definitely there from all the girls. I was very pleased with them in that aspect. We just can’t get sloppy and need to stick to our offense when things start getting tight,” Anderson said.
Tuesday night (Dec. 9) the Lady Horns travel to Florence. The Gophers have one loss on their record to Payson’s three wins and one loss.
Following the Florence game the Payson team will host the two-day Holiday Hoops Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12 and 13.
Scheduled to participate are teams from Apollo, Apache Junction, Desert Mountain, Canyon del Oro, Parker, Santan Foothills and Horizon Honors.
Payson’s first game is at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12 against Santan Foothills, according to tournament director Margine Bawden.
