It was a pleasant surprise this morning when I went outside to retrieve the morning newspaper — the ground was white! According to all the weather reports we heard over the past few days, Tonto Village and Payson were not going to get any snow. The snow was not even an inch deep, but with the wind blowing around it was downright chilly! The temperature read about 29 degrees on my front porch, but it sure felt colder than that. My beagle did not want to even peek her head out the door.
The Hellsgate annual Christmas party will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Lamplighter Community Room. Chief Hatch would like everyone to dress semiformal. There will also be a gift exchange. The gift should not cost more than $10.
Chief Hatch is also asking everyone to bring a few canned goods for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

In last week’s column, I mentioned Pastor Roger Pike’s birthday on Dec. 10. That was right, but his wife’s name is Joyce, not Bernita. I apologize to you, Pastor.
For the week of Dec. 21, Carol O’Dell of Thompson Draw II will add another ornament on her Christmas tree, she is a part-time resident and she spends a good bit of time in Texas. She also helps every year with Vacation Bible School at the Tonto Village Chapel.
The next day, Dec. 23, Jan Farmer takes her turn to add another ornament to her tree. Jan works in the X-Ray department at Payson Regional Medical Center.
Then another resident of Thompson Draw II, Nancy Yoakum, gets to add an ornament on Dec. 26. Nancy is very active in our little community, she is the president of the Fireflies, the Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary, and is an avid Domino player with the Domino Divas. Nancy also is a great help to Vacation Bible School in the arts and crafts sessions and volunteers at the hospital as a pink lady.
The rest of the month is filled with my family’s birthdays and anniversaries. My youngest daughter Carolyn, who lives in Denison, Iowa, will celebrate her 37th birthday, my daughter-in-law Shari has her big day on Dec. 29. Then my oldest daughter Joanne and her husband Gary celebrate their anniversary on Dec. 31. December is a very busy month for the Snyder clan. There are birthdays on the 1st, 5th, 6th and 12th, besides the ones I have mentioned. Whew!
Rick Prach of Tonto Village I recently lost his mother Carol Prach to cancer. Carol passed away Nov. 19. Carol lived in Sun City West and also spent time in the Village. May happy memories carry you through this sorrowful time.
The ladies nine-ball tournament got under way this past Tuesday evening, and the Tonto Village gals swept the pool tables. The winners were Betty Koutz, Kara Shaw and Sue Prach. By the way, Sue has a new toy. Her husband Rick bought Sue a golf cart to zip around the Village. Rick jokingly says, “If you see Sue coming, move out of the way!”
Ethel Cain reported to me that there will be a Christmas pool party at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16 at the Double D. The event will be a potluck and a gift exchange.
