Wet weather and winter conditions in most of Gila County are causing multiple collisions along Highways 87 and 260. The Department of Public Safety is reporting seven collisions and five motorists assistance calls for slides off the road in Northern Arizona.
North of Payson, snow chains are required for travel and around the Strawberry-Pine area, the roadways are icy, especially near Clint’s Well.
Adding to the mix of weather obstacles, rockslides are being reported along both Highways 260 and 87. Near milepost 234 on Highway 87, nearly two miles south of State Route 188 a rock fall is reported.
With the constant rain expected to continue into Thursday afternoon, DPS is advising motorists check weather and road conditions before heading out and stay home if possible.
To prevent loss of control on snow, ice, sleet, freezing rain or rain soaked roadway surfaces, DPS advises motorists to slow down, allow for greater following distances, perform gradual braking and keep the steering straight.
If your vehicle does go into a skid, slow down and steer gradually into the skid to regain control. Carry plenty of food and water and have a fully charged cell phone.
