Local and Valley residents looking for that perfect holiday outing that combines family fun, Christmas lights and maybe a few drawn horses have discovered Audra and Phillip Daugherty’s horse-drawn Christmas lights tours.
Country Carriage Company was launched less than a year ago, but Audra reports she is booked solid for the rest of the holiday season, but is still taking reservations for year-round private events.
“We did it for fun last year and no one was really doing it up here, so we decided to do it,” Audra said of starting up the business. “The response has been overwhelming and the most exciting thing is that people are coming up from the Valley, eating at local restaurants and staying overnight.”
Audra said business took off, after she listed the horse tours on the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce Web site’s calendar of events.
“We have people that want to bring their kids and older couples, so there is a mix of people,” she said. “Everyone said they hope to make memories or start a tradition and come every year.”
The Daughertys have two horses, Ben, a Belgian Draft-Morgan Cross gelding and Gypsy, a North American Spotted Draft mare. They also have a hay wagon and two sleighs for street and off-road excursions.
Seven 20-minute tours will run every Saturday night through Dec. 27 around the Woodhill subdivision and include hot cocoa, cookies and sleigh bells.
The pair hope to offer holiday carriage rides next year and offer year-round rides for anniversaries, parties or weddings.
The Daughertys moved to the Tonto Village area 12 years ago and manage a guest ranch on Control Road.
