It’s early in the basketball season but it’s time to make a first check on the all-important power point rankings, which will eventually be used to seed prep teams into the state tournament.
(See Extra Points for explanation of power points).
Among the rankings for the 28 3A girls teams in Arizona, the Lady Longhorns are sitting in eighth place with 28.52 points.
With 43.16 points, Chinle holds down first. Payson is the highest ranked East team with the next region school being Alchesay in 17th.
In fact, the East is not showing well with Snowflake 23rd, Round Valley 24th, Show Low 25th and Blue Ridge 26th.
Among the boys teams, Payson — the defending state runner-up — is seventh with 30.13 points. Chinle holds down first with 38.35 points. With 34.33, Chino Valley is second.
From the East, Alchesay is 18th, Show Low 19th, Blue Ridge 24th and Round Valley 25th.
Defending state champion Estrella Foothills, which is expected to make a run at a second state title, is third with 33.16 points.
Only the top 16 teams will make it to the state tournament when it tips off Feb. 20.
