The Payson Senior Center is currently closed due to a broken pipe and the resulting flooding.
Barbara Underwood, president of the Senior Center board of directors, said the pipe broke in the ceiling above the kitchen and flooded the facility with about two inches of water. Most of the ceiling collapsed and what remained in place was too damage to retain, so the fire department pulled it down.
The in-house meal program and all other activities at the center have been cancelled. The Meals on Wheels program will continue with housebound clients receiving frozen meals for now. Two were delivered on Monday to take care of the clients for Monday and Tuesday.
Senior Center director Reed Cox said the transportation service would continue.
“The fire department did wonders to help,” Underwood said. In addition to taking down the damaged ceiling the firefighters pulled out the floodwater.
Underwood said the Center is getting bids for the repairs, but it is likely the facility cannot be used for at least three weeks.
The board and staff are investigating a variety of options to continue the Center’s lunch program, but as of press time, no decisions have been made regarding when meal services will resume.
