Snow and rain over the weekend and Monday morning forced restrictions on Highways 87 and 260 outside Payson to chains and four-wheel-drive only until 9 a.m. Monday morning.
Highway 260 was restricted from Steve Coury Ford east to four-wheel-drive and or chains only, and Highway 87 was restricted at Home Depot to chains and four-wheel drive only, as well as the highway to Heber-Overgaard.
Highway 87 is temporarily closed in the Strawberry area as wreckers remove a vehicle that slipped off the side of the road, but is expected to reopen shortly.
The announcement from DPS came this morning after snow began to fall on-and-off all day yesterday in the Payson area.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for northern Gila County, including the Payson area for the entire day.
"A winter storm warning continues for all areas across northern
Arizona today. A cold and moist area of low pressure will be moving across the state bringing snow to all locations," said the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to rise to about 41 degrees today, but DPS warns motorists to use caution when driving in wet or snowy conditions.
"Be wary of treacherous driving conditions along area roadways as near white-out conditions will accompany slippery conditions," the weather service said.
All schools in the Payson area, including Pine-Strawberry Elementary School and Gila Community College are closed for the day.
