A 51-42 regional tournament quarterfinal win over the Snowflake Lobos has earned the Lady Longhorn basketball team a berth in the state tournament.
The Lady Horns chalked up the win Feb. 6 at Round Valley High School.
Exactly what seed Payson will take to the state showdown, which begins Feb. 11 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, won't be known until this evening, Friday, when the East regional championship game is played at Round Valley High School in Eagar-Springerville.
The Lady Longhorns defeated Round Valley 46-39 in the semi-final game Thursday night. The Payson girls will play Alchesay in the finals tonight at 5 p.m. in Round Valley.
The Lady Horns seed into the state finals will be determined by their power-point ranking but could improve if they win the East tournament championship. Payson tied Round Valley and Alchesay for the regular season title.
All finished 7-3 in the East.
Payson is currently ranked 12th in power points with a 13-5 regular season record. The Lady Horns are actually 22-6 overall, but tournament games are not counted in power-point rankings.
If Payson remains a 12th seed, the team would open state play at noon Feb. 11 in Flagstaff against the No. 5 seed, which could be Parker High School.
Once the regional tournaments from around the state are completed today, conference officials will seed the 16 qualifying teams into the state tournament.
The first two rounds will be played in Flagstaff and the final four and championship at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
