Two people had to be rescued from Fossil Creek earlier this week after a failed attempt to get to the hot springs near Childs.

Personnel from both the Pine-Strawberry and Payson Fire departments responded to a call for assistance from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

"They got caught in the current and were pushed downstream about 50 yards," said Harris Scott, one of the five men who took the 7 p.m. call Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The duo had a cell phone and called 9-1-1. The Rim Country team was called because they were closer, Scott said.

The team, which also included Bill Potter and Tom Cordova of PSFD and Sam Mays and Toby Waugh of the PFD, hiked in about 1-1/2 miles to get to the people. One of them was washed up on the west bank, but the second, a 26-year-old woman, came out on the east bank and had to be rescued.

"There were no injuries, but we had to carry her out on our backs. She lost her shoes," Scott said.

The crew was out on the call until about 1 a.m., he said.
