Douglas W. Pownall, age 81, died Feb. 19, 2008 in Payson, Ariz.
He was born in Moorcroft, Wyo., Feb 13, 1927 to Everett and Ruth (Jackson) Pownall. He was raised on the Pownall ranch, 23 miles north of Rozet, Wyo. He attended country schools through the eighth grade and went into Gillette for high school, spending part of the 10th grade in Sheridan.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and went to boot camp in Chicago at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He served until 1946 and was discharged in San Diego, Calif. He was a water well driller and drove a truck, but due to poor health and disability, he retired in 1985.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Elaine Bay and her family, Jack, Judy, Jacob and Joel Shearer of Gillette, Wyo.; son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Debbie Pownall of Payson, daughter Cindy Madden of Phoenix, daughter-in-law Carol Pownall of Phoenix; brother Stanley Pownall of Glendale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his three sons: Kenneth, Timmy, and Larry Pownall; his brother Jack Pownall; and sister, June Pownall Wilson.
A private memorial service will take place on the Pownall Ranch at a later date.
