"Jake's Corner," the film director Jeff Santo made at the little community of the same name on Highway 188, debuts at the Sedona International Film Festival on Feb. 29 and March 1.
Mike Gauvin and Rick Heppler, owners of Jake's Corner Bar and Sylvia Bimas, who had a brief role playing herself in the film, are headed to the premiere this weekend.
"I'm absolutely excited about going to the debut," Bimas said.
"The clippings and trailers on the Internet are awesome. Check out the Web site at www.jakescornerthemovie.com. The music is great, too," she added.
Singer B.J. Thomas, famous for "Hooked on a Feelin'" and "Somebody Done Somebody Wrong," plays Doc and sings six new songs in the film, including "When the Hero Dies."
"Jake's Corner" is about former Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Dunn. Dunn, as the filmmaker's fictional storyline goes, left the NFL after his parents died in a plane crash. Eventually, he resurfaces in Jake's Corner. Tragedy strikes again when Dunn's sister and brother-in-law are killed in a car accident and Dunn must raise his eight-year-old nephew, Spence.
The film stars Richard Tyson as Dunn, Diane Ladd as Fran, David Della Rocco as "Wheels" and Colton Rogers as Dunn's nephew.
Local extras and crew who worked on "Jake's Corner" this past summer include: Bimas, Gauvin, Heppler, Jacob Sopeland, June Schranz, Doc Holliday and Royce O'Donnell.
Some of the local talent employed as extras and crew during the May 2007 shooting schedule knew of the Sedona premier, others did not.
Schranz heard last summer that Santo hoped to screen the movie in Payson after it was in the can, but according to Steve Carr of the Kerr Carr Group who is doing public relations for "Jake's Corner," that is not happening yet.
Single and wait-list tickets are still available for "Jake's Corner" and other festival movies by visiting Harkins Theatre at 2081 W. Highway 89A, Sedona. More information is on the Web at www.sedonafilmfestival.com.
