Payson Parks and Recreation coordinator Joe Harris has put together an ambitious list of 2008 offerings, including a Little Longhorn Wrestling Camp.

Unique to the camp is that several of the Longhorn varsity team wrestlers will work as guest instructors. Harris, also a PHS assistant wrestling coach, will be on hand to oversee the clinic.

PHS head coach Dave LaMotte could also participate.

The camp, which is open to youths in third through sixth grades, will be held 4 to 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, from Feb. 12 to March 8 in the Wilson Dome wrestling room.

At the conclusion of the camp, a final wrestling tournament will be held.

"It (the camp) will be a great way for the younger kids to prepare for high school (wrestling)," Harris said.

The registration fee of $20 must be paid by Feb. 1 at the Payson Parks and Recreation office located at Green Valley Park. The fee includes a Little Longhorn camp T-shirt.

More programs

In addition to the wrestling camp, Harris is preparing to host a third- and fourth-grade basketball league, both an adult and youth "Basketball Bonanza," the "Ruckus on the Rim" adult dodge ball tournament and an adult basketball league.

Registration for the third- and fourth-grade basketball league must be completed by Jan. 25. The fee is $20, which includes an NBA reversible T-shirt and end-of-the-season pizza party.

Harris said the league is also in need of volunteer coaches.

Both Basketball Bonanzas will be held Feb. 16 in Rim Country Middle School gymnasium. The youth event, open to youngsters nine to 14 years of age, will begin at 10 a.m. The adult competition begins at 1 p.m. and will include divisions for both men and women from 18 to 30 years of age and 30 years plus.

The bonanza's three events include three-point, free-throw and hotshot competitions. Registration, which is $15 per player, will be Jan. 14 to Feb. 16. Winners in the youth division will be eligible to advance to a state finals which will be held at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix.

The Ruckus on the Rim tournament will be Feb. 16 in the old PHS gymnasium. The registration fee, which is $60 per team, must be paid by Feb. 8. The tournament will feature both men's and women's divisions.
