Today I want to share with everyone some helpful tips as to how much you can do with Alka-Seltzer tablets.
1. Clean a vase: To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets.
2. Clean a thermos bottle: Fill the bottle with water, drop in three Alka Seltzer tablets and let soak for an hour or longer if necessary.
3. Clean a toilet: Drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait 20 minutes, brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action cleans vitreous china.
4. Unclog a drain: Clear a sink drain by dropping three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz white vinegar and wait a few minutes. Then run the hot water.
With my meals, I sometimes like to have something unusual and fun to drink so, how about trying a yummy Strawberry Squash (no, it is not a veggie drink) and Honey and Fruit Cocktail. While enjoying your drink, serve a meal of Deep-fried Veal, along with Potato or Tomato Salad.
2 pounds veal escalopes
4 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
2 ounces dry breadcrumbs
oil for deep frying
1 lemon, sliced
Cut the meat into small pieces. Beat the egg. Mix the flour with the salt and pepper. Coat the meat first in the flour, then in the egg and finally in the breadcrumbs, so that the pieces are well-covered. Heat the oil in a deep-frying pan until it is 350 degrees. Fry the meat for six minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on absorbent paper. Arrange on a warmed serving plate and garnish with slices of lemon. Deep fry individual sprigs of parsley in the oil for 30 seconds and use to garnish the veal. Serves four.
8 ounces strawberries
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons strawberry ice cream
3/4 pint milk
juice of one lemon
juice of one orange
grated rind of one lemon
3 tablespoons of icing sugar
4 ice cubes
Halve the strawberries and place in a bowl. Sprinkle with sugar and leave for 30 minutes for the juice to be extracted. Blend the strawberries and juice in the blender, add the ice cream, milk, lemon juice, orange juice, grated rind of lemon and icing sugar and blend for a further 30 seconds. Pour into four glasses and add an ice cube to each one. Makes 4 drinks.
Variation: Make a Pineapple Squash by replacing the strawberries with canned or fresh pineapple. Use vanilla ice cream in place of the strawberry. Pour 1 to 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup on top before serving.
Honey and Fruit Cocktail
2 dessert apples
3 tablespoons clear honey
3/4 pint apple juice
3/4 pint grape juice
10 hazelnuts, chopped
3 tablespoons whipping cream
Peel, core and slice the apples. Heat the honey with the apple and grape juices until it has dissolved. Pour the mixture into the blender and add the hazelnuts and sliced apples. Blend for 2 minutes and pour into four glasses. Lightly whip the cream and place a spoonful on each drink. Serve at once. Makes 4 drinks.
Variation: The apples may be replaced with 8 ounces of stoned plums or two bananas and the juice of two oranges and a half grapefruit. If desired, pieces of fruit may be added to the drink just before serving.
