Elton Earl (Sonny) Stribling, 78, of Payson, died Jan. 13, 2008. He was born Feb. 12, 1929 in Philadelphia, Miss. to Luther Eugene Stribling and Alice Mable (Burril) Stribling.
He served with the U.S. Army in the military police unit. While stationed at Fort Meyer, Va., he was a guard for General Dwight Eisenhower's house, served as a sentry for the Unknown Soldiers' tomb and served as guard at the Pentagon.
He also marched in the Honor Guard behind the caisson carrying a brave soldier to his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1948, he came to Arizona after his discharge from the Army. In Glendale, Ariz., he found the love of his life, Mary Evelyn Harris. They were married Dec. 4, 1949 at Free Methodist Church, Glendale, Ariz. They were married 58 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn, sons Keith and Mark and daughter Sheri; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, three brothers, seven sisters and two precious granddaughters Rochelle and Heather.
A visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at Chapel of the Chimes, 7924 N 59th Ave., Glendale, Ariz. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Chapel of the Chimes. Donations in his name may be made to RTA Hospice, 511 S. Mud Springs Road, Payson, AZ 85541.
