Longhorns Feed Off Struggling Cougars


There have been seasons the Show Low Cougars have put contending, top-notch basketball teams on the floor.

But the 2007-2008 campaign is not one of them.

"I remember my first year here (2004-2005), they were good," coach Kenny Hayes said. "But they are struggling now."

The woeful Cats, who have been inept all season long, turned in one of their most lackluster showings Jan. 22 in a 66-28 loss to the Payson Longhorns.

Payson jumped out to a 21-6 early lead, which prompted Hayes to begin substituting liberally in an attempt to hold the score down.

The coach, however, wasn't able to accomplish that, mostly because the Cougar offense couldn't score against Payson's man-to-man defense.

In a woeful second quarter, the Cougar offense scored but four points.

The loss drops Show Low to 3-21-1 and 0-6 in the East.

Meanwhile, the Horns' victory kept the team atop the East standings with a 6-0 record (16-5 overall).

For Payson, Oliver Lewinson dominated inside finishing with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tyler Savage contributed 12 points and Cody York had nine.

York also turned in a sparkling floor game, finishing with six assists, four steals, a blocked shot and two-for-two free-throw shooting.
