Aspiring football players have just two opportunities remaining to register for play in the Central Arizona Youth Football Association.
Those chances will be 9 a.m. to noon July 12 and 19 at the equipment room/concession stand located just south of the Rumsey 3 playing field.
The fee is $80 for players and $75 for cheerleaders. When registering, participants must bring a copy of their birth certificates.
In a recent CAYFA board meeting, members voted to assess a $20 late fee for those who sign up after July 19.
Board member Felicia Moore said the penalty was assessed to try to avoid the usual problems associated with late registrations, "Time is growing short, we need to make plans and know how many (players and cheerleaders) we have."
At the CAYFA meeting, members also set the league's annual draft for 9 a.m. July 26 and the start of team practices for July 28.
Moore is unsure of the exact time practices will be held, but traditionally they have been 5 to 7 p.m. at Rumsey.
Also, league play kicks off Sept. 7 in Prescott, and the Payson teams will make their annual appearance in the Walkup Skydome at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Sept. 27.
Playing indoors on a university football field is a huge thrill for the young athletes, Moore said.
The board also tapped Grant Owens as the coach of the Payson Broncos team that will compete in the CAYFA Mighty Mite division.
In an effort to adequately fund the five teams in the league, local board members are currently scouring the town trying to find corporate sponsors.
"We do need some (financial) help," Moore said.
The association also has an opening for a cheerleaders sponsor.
